The thesis cotutelle agreement

(Decree of May 25, 2016 on doctoral training)

The thesis cotutelle procedure enables a French or foreign doctoral student to simultaneously obtain the French doctoral degree and the equivalent foreign degree, after a single defense.
A thesis cotutelle takes place within the framework of an international thesis cotutelle agreement concluded between the two institutions concerned. The request must be made before April 15 of the first academic year of thesis enrolment, and the agreement is the legal document that validates the cotutelle arrangement. The thesis director must complete two documents:

  • The agreement
  • The scientific form

These documents will be forwarded to the Doctoral School, which will manage the agreement with the International Relations Department and the Doctoral Training Department.

The international thesis cotutelle agreement is drawn up for a period of 3 years. If the thesis is to be extended, the doctoral student must complete, sign and have signed a rider and a scientific rider request form.
